Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) officials first reported a two-vehicle crash inside Bore 4 of the tunnel around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14. While two right lanes were blocked, traffic was still able to flow through Bore 3, MDTA said.

Minutes later, authorities confirmed that a dump truck had overturned, spilling gravel onto the roadway and worsening delays.

Photos from the scene showed cars stuck behind the wreckage as police and firefighters worked to clear the scene.

Motorists were advised to expect significant delays while crews worked to reopen the lanes.

This is a developing story.
